SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” isn’t just a film, it’s a landmark blockbuster that has become the pride of Indian cinema. “Baahubali: The Beginning,” released in 2015, and “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” in 2017, set box office records that remain unbroken even today. The film’s story, sets, visuals, and music were all magnificent. Stars like Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, and Tamannaah Bhatia captivated audiences with their portrayals. But the true soul of this grand film was Rajmata Sivagami Devi, played by Ramya Krishnan. The story behind the character is quite fascinating. Let’s explore what exactly that is.
In Baahubali, the character of Rajmata Sivagami was the heart of the story. She wasn’t just a queen, but an epitome of courage, strength, and justice. Ramya Krishnan played the role with such fervor that audiences truly felt like the queen of Mahishmati. Her famous scene, in which she strides forward with a child in one hand and a torch in the other, still sends chills down the spine. The anger in her eyes, the calmness on her face, and the weight of her voice combined to make Sivagami a memorable character in cinema.

Ramya Krishnan recently revealed in an interview that she was initially reluctant to do “Baahubali.” She was busy with other projects at the time, and her son was very young. Therefore, she didn’t take the film seriously. She thought it would be just another period drama. However, her husband convinced her that this wasn’t an ordinary film, but rather the dream project of a director with a great vision. She said that the opportunity to work with a filmmaker like S.S. Rajamouli doesn’t come along often.

Ramya Krishnan says that when she first heard the scene of Sivagami, in which she walks forward with a child in one hand and a torch in the other, she realized that this role was something different. At that very moment, she decided to play it wholeheartedly. She poured her heart and soul into every emotion and expression of Sivagami. As a result, as soon as the film was released, audiences recognized her not just as an actress, but as the real Rajmata. Even today, when people talk about “Baahubali,” Ramya Krishnan’s name is the first to come to mind. This role gave her the recognition an actor gets only once in a lifetime. “Baahubali: The Epic” is releasing on October 31st.
