The Malayalam film industry has produced some incredible talents, but one actor stands out for his unparalleled contribution and impact on the industry. With a career spanning over three decades, this iconic actor has left an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences.
This legendary actor was none other than the Late Prem Nazir, who is widely regarded as one of the most prolific actors in Indian cinema. With a career spanning over 700 films, he has showcased his versatility and range, captivating audiences with his performances. From romantic leads to dramatic roles, Prem Nazir’s on-screen presence has been unforgettable. Prem Nazir’s incredible productivity is notable, with him starring in an astonishing 30 films in a single year, not just once, but twice. This is remarkable considering that even 5-6 films a year is typically considered a heavy workload for an actor.
Prem Nazir’s film career spanned over three decades and more than 700 films. He debuted with Marumakal (1952) and established himself as a leading actor in Malayalam cinema with films like Padatha Painkili (1957) and Mariakutty (1958). His golden years (1960s-1970s) included classics like Iruttinte Athmavu (1967), Kallichellamma (1969), and Nadhi (1969). He played dual roles in almost 40 films and also romanced 80 heroines on-screen, but had a popular on-screen pairing with actress Sheela in 130 films.
In the 1980s, he continued acting in films like Ariyappedatha Rahasyam (1981) and Dhwani (1988). Prem Nazir holds two Guinness World Records and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1983 for his contributions to Indian cinema, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential actors in Malayalam cinema.
Prem Nazir was married to Habeeba Beevi, and they had one son, Shanavas, and three daughters: Laila, Rasiya, and Rita. His son Shanavas acted in a few films but couldn’t replicate his father’s success. Interestingly, Shanavas’s wife, Ayisha Beevi, is the daughter of Prem Nazir’s eldest sister, Suleikha Beevi. Tragically, Prem Nazir’s life was cut short when he contracted measles while being treated for a duodenal ulcer at Vijaya Hospital in Chennai. He passed away on January 16, 1989, at the age of 62. His body was transported to Thiruvananthapuram and buried with full state honors.
Prem Nazir’s impact on Malayalam cinema is immeasurable. With a career spanning over three decades and more than 700 films, he has left an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences.
