While acting is primarily about performance, one cannot ignore the significance of looks and appearance in achieving success, especially in a visual medium. This has led many actors to focus on their appearance, often battling insecurities. A prime example is this superstar, who was so affected by his skin colour that even considered taking on only villain roles.
Mithun Chakraborty, the OG ‘Disco Dancer’ of the industry has done a long list of movies. In fact, he holds the record in the Limca Book Records for 19 movie releases in a row, and the record is till not been broken by any other actor in the industry. But did you know, that during the early stage of his career, no actress wanted to work opposite him?
Mithun once revealed that no big actress wanted to work with him as they all had issues with his dark skin tone. He stated, “I thought I will never be able to go from being a B-grade actor to an A-grade actor Heroines have said no to work on a film even after being announced.”
The actor once confessed that he had complexes about his dark skin colour. In an interview with Komal Nahata, he revealed taking on only villain roles, as no one would cast him as a hero. “Since my complexion was such, I also got a complex about it. So, I thought, I can’t change my skin tone, but I can play a villain in movies. I went to the film institute and came back with good training, ” the actor had said.
However, when Mithun moved to Bombay to pursue a career in films, he discovered that there was indeed an audience for his talent. He made his debut with Mrigayaa in 1976 and won National Award for Best Actor. However, his career reached to new heights with 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer. The film broke all records in India and became a sensation in Soviet Union. By the end of its run, Disco Dancer earned Rs 100 crore globally, becoming the first Indian film to achieve that milestone. Moreover, it also broke the record of all-time blockbuster Sholay, which grossed Rs 35 crore worldwide.
