A face emerged on the silver screen in the 1940s and 1950s, captivating audiences with her graceful charm. Her name was Minoo Mumtaz, but more than her art, she etched herself in the pages of history for a scandal that shocked society at the time. Even today, this is difficult to digest. A single scene shook Bollywood, depicting her onscreen romance with her own brother, Mehmood, which was widely criticized at the time.

One Scene Shook Her Life

Legendary comedian Mehmood’s younger sister, Minoo Mumtaz, caused a stir when she flirted with her brother in the song “Gora Rang Chunariya Kali” from the film “Howrah Bridge.” It was considered such a crime that society demanded a boycott. This single scene unleashed a storm in her life. A few years later, she left the country and settled abroad. Sadly, in her final days, she lost her memory, a loss no one had imagined.

Why Did She Step Into Films?

Minoo Mumtaz’s real name was Malikunnisa Ali. She inherited her talent. Her father, Mumtaz Ali, was a renowned dancer himself, but his alcohol addiction ruined his career. Suddenly, the burden of seven siblings fell on Minoo’s shoulders. The family’s financial difficulties forced 13-year-old Minoo to work in films. She made her screen debut with “Tawaif,” even though her mother was strongly against it. While she was roaming around studios in search of work, filmmaker Nanubhai Vakil noticed her, and she got the film “Sakhi Hakim.”

Post-Controversy Comeback

Minoo wasn’t just Mehmood’s sister. She was also a relative of Meena Kumari (Mehmood was married to Meena Kumari’s sister) and the aunt of the famous singer Lucky Ali. Dance was in her blood, and her boldness was new for that era. The forced role in “Howrah Bridge,” where she had to perform intimately with her brother Mehmood on the song “Gora Rang Chunariya Kali,” became the most controversial turning point in her life. People disapproved of this brother-sister onscreen romance and demanded their boycott. However, Minoo persevered. She played important roles in films like “Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam” (1962), “Kagaz Ke Phool” (1959), and “Chaudhavin Ka Chand” (1960), and the controversy gradually subsided.

A New Life Away From the Screen

At the peak of her career, Minoo Mumtaz married film director S. Ali Akbar in 1963 at the insistence of her family. As promised, she completed films like “Jahaan Ara” and “Palki” and then retired from acting forever. Interestingly, she was pregnant during the shooting of “Jahaan Ara” and “Palki.” “Palki” took four years to complete (released in 1967). The director deliberately filmed scenes to show her pregnancy on screen. Minoo and Ali Akbar had four children. After marriage, Minoo Mumtaz left the country and settled abroad.

This Is How Minoo’s Story Ended

In 2003, her life took another devastating turn when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This disease robbed her of her memory, and she even forgot her loved ones. Although she regained her memory after a successful operation, this tragedy haunted her until her final days. On October 23, 2021, Minoo Mumtaz passed away in Toronto, Canada, at the age of 79, marking the end of an extraordinary yet controversial chapter in Bollywood history.
