Vidya Balan is a leading name in Indian cinema. She has proved her versatility in acting with numerous hits over the past decades. Arguably, the most significant film of her career The Dirty Picture (2010), reshaped the course of her journey in the industry. In fact, the actress admitted that it was boldest character she has ever played on-screen.
To ensure the success of the film, Vidya adopted the retro-like look to portray the character of Silk Smitha. In fact, she had to put on weight as per the character requirements. The actress was a bit apprehensive and did not want to put a lot many kilos. But, Vidya was in the favour of script so much that she did what was required.
While speaking to Hindustan Times, Balan said, “Yes, I gained 12 kilograms for this film because this girl belongs to the South film industry and the actresses were mostly wholesome out there, especially the dancing stars. So, I had to put on weight. Initially, I was a little apprehensive and I did not want to put on so many kilos, but then I realised that if I don’t do it, I wouldn’t be doing justice to the role. So, then I went ahead and put on 12 kilograms.”
Moreover, for the character, Vidya reportedly used to smoke 15 cigarettes in 2 hours. Following the film, she became addicted to cigarettes and would smoke daily. While appearing on Unfiltered with Samdish, Vidya said, “I don’t think I should say this on camera but I enjoy smoking. If you told me that there is no harm that a cigarette would do then I would have become a smoker. I love the smell of smoke. Even at bus stops in my college days, I would sit next to people who would smoke. After The Dirty Picture, I got addicted. I would smoke 2-3 cigarettes a day.”
Vidya’s dedication and commitment was indeed visible as the film became a huge success at the box office. Reportedly, the actress wasn’t the first choice for the role. The makers did approach Kangana Ranaut and Bipasha Basu, but the actresses turned down their offer.
Made in Rs 18 crore, The Dirty Picture earned Rs 117 crore, i.e. six times its budget. Apart from Balan, the romantic drama also featured Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor in pivotal roles. Produced by Ekta Kapoor, the film was helmed by Milan Luthria and became critical as well as commercial success.
