Bhanurekha Ganesan, better known as Rekha, is one of the most beloved and cherished actresses in the industry. While she is primarily known for her work in Hindi films, she also holds a prominent place in the South industry, thanks to her parents. Her mother, Pushpavalli was an Indian actress who predominantly worked in Telugu and Tamil films.
She marked her fame by playing the character of Sita in Sampoorna Ramayanam, which was released in 1936 when she was just 10. She started working at an early age to support her family financially and later became one of the highest-paid child artists in 1930s. After that, Pushpavalli starred in numerous films, some of her best work includes Nagamma (1942), Miss Malini (1947) , Samsaram (1951), Sansar (1951) and more.
Besides garnering fame for her professional life, Pushpavalli made headlines for her personal life. She was just 14 years old when she married a Lawyer named I V Rangachari in 1940. However their marriage didn’t last long and they started living separately. Following that, a major turn came into her life when she worked with actor Gemini Ganesan in Miss Malini. During the making of the film, she fell in love with him. Even though they were in marriage, they got into a relationship.
Despite being in a serious relationship, Ganesan never gave Pushpavalli the status of his wife. They together had two daughters, Rekha and Radha. Pushpavalli spent the rest of her life as Ganesan’s girlfriend and passed away in 1991.
However, her daughters Rekha and Radha became actresses like her. While Rekha worked primarily in Hindi films, Radha worked in Tamil movies like her mother. However, later she got married and moved to the United States.
