This actress began her journey in the Telugu film industry and later transitioned to Tamil cinema. She made her debut as a child actress, playing young Sita in the film Sampoorna Ramayanam (1936), for which she was paid Rs 300. This marked the start of her career, with several more child star roles following. As she grew older, she transitioned into adult roles, and her career gained momentum. Her biggest success came with the Telugu film Bala Nagamma (1942), where she delivered a memorable performance in an important supporting role. However, her lead role in the 1947 film Miss Malini was a mixed bag. While the film earned critical acclaim and appreciation from the intelligentsia, it unfortunately failed to perform at the box office.
This actress often made headlines for her personal life rather than her films. She married in 1940, but after six years, her marriage fell apart, leading her to live separately from her husband. A significant turning point in her life came when she starred as the lead in the film Miss Malini alongside a newcomer, Gemini Ganesan. Despite both being married to other people at the time, the two fell in love and began a relationship, adding a new chapter of complexity and intrigue to her life.
Gemini Ganesan never gave her the status of being his wife, but she spent her entire life as his girlfriend. She has two daughters with Ganesan and one of them is veteran actress Rekha. Yes, you read it right!
We are talking about actress Pushpavalli, the mother of Rekha. Pushpavalli married IV Rangachari in 1940, but their marriage hit a rough patch, and they started living separately by 1946. Later, she entered into a relationship with actor Gemini Ganesan. Together, they had two daughters – Rekha, who went on to become a celebrated actress in the film industry, and Radha.

After her breakup from Gemini Ganesan, Pushpavalli continued to act in a few more films. Ganesan refused to acknowledge Rekha as his daughter or provide support for her. Later, Pushpavalli married K. Prakash, a cinematographer from Madras, and legally changed her name to K. Pushpavalli. Due to Pushpavalli’s busy acting schedule, Rekha often stayed with her grandmother during her childhood.
Pushpavalli found immense joy in Rekha’s success in the film industry. She was equally proud of her third daughter, Radha, who married Syed Usman, a former Bollywood model, in 1976. Radha and her husband later settled in the United States. Pushpavalli passed away in 1991 in Madras due to complications related to diabetes.
Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan’s rumoured relationship was one of the biggest scandalous affairs in Bollywood’s history. Their affair began on the sets of the film Do Anjaane. Big B was already married at that time with Jaya Bachchan, still it was said that Rekha was head-over-heels in love with the actor.
