The Mahanayika of Indian Cinema
Suchitra is regarded as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema. She began her acting journey with Bengali cinema in 1952. Two years later, in 1955, she transitioned to Hindi cinema. Over her three-decade-long career, she delivered several superhits, particularly with superstar Uttam Kumar.
Suchitra starred in films like Devdas, Aandhi, Bambai Ka Babu, and Mamta. One of her films, Aandhi, received massive acclaim from the audience. However, her 1978 film Pranay Pasha failed at the box office.
Her husband’s death in 1970 deeply affected her, yet she continued acting. However, after Pranay Pasha, she announced her retirement, turning down Satyajit Ray’s Devi Chaudharani and leaving Nati Binodini (opposite Rajesh Khanna) unfinished. She withdrew from public life, spending most of her time in seclusion at her home in Calcutta, avoiding public appearances and dedicating herself to the Ramakrishna Mission.
In 2005, Sen was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic honor. However, she refused to step into the public eye. In January 2014, the legendary actress passed away in a Kolkata hospital at the age of 82 after battling a lung infection.
