While many film personalities distanced themselves from the glamorous world of acting and chose a life devoted to spirituality and religion, not all of them have made a comeback to the industry. Several actors have embraced a lifelong commitment to spirituality, adopting religious attire and becoming seekers of God. Suchitra Sen made a remarkable impact with her performance alongside Sanjeev Kumar in the much-celebrated film Aandhi. Other notable films in her career include Devdas (1955), Bombai Ka Babu (1960), and Mamata (1966). After a successful acting career spanning over two decades, Suchitra Sen retired from films in 1978 and dedicated the later years of her life to the Ramakrishna Mission, living in its service as a devotee.
Many may not know that Suchitra Sen had one final wish before her passing, to portray the role of Ma Sarada Devi, the revered wife of Saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa and a spiritual leader in her own right. This heartfelt desire however remained unfulfilled according to a close family friend.
After her last film Pranay Pasha, in 1978, Sen withdrew from the film industry and grew deeply connected with the monks of the Ramakrishna Math in Belurmath, located just a few kilometers from Kolkata. “Her final wish was to play Ma Sarada. She often expressed this desire, saying she longed to act in a film about her,” shared Gopal Krishna Roy, a close friend of the legendary actress.
In her later years, Suchitra Sen led a life of seclusion, residing in her apartment in the southern part of the city. She spent most of her time immersed in spiritual literature and listening to devotional songs. Roy revealed that even during her final days at Belle Vue Clinic, where she was receiving care, she kept photographs of Ma Sarada and other religious texts by her bedside.
Devotional music played at the hospital at Sen’s request, and monks from the Ramakrishna Math frequently visited to offer their blessings and support, embodying the deep connection she had with the monastic order until her last moments.
