Bigg Boss 19 kicked off last night, and one of the most talked-about contestants this season is Bollywood actress Kunickaa Sadanand. Many remember her from films like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and Hum Saath Saath Hain, where she shared screen space with Salman Khan. But what a lot of people don’t know is that Kunickaa is not just an actress—she’s also a trained lawyer, politician, and social worker.
In a candid chat with Screen, Kunickaa opened up about why she said yes to Bigg Boss and the challenges she has faced as a senior actor trying to make a comeback.
Reflecting on her 35-year journey in the industry, she said, “Bigg Boss was always on my bucket list. I want to see how I react in stressful situations and, at the same time, grow spiritually. Inside the house, I don’t have to worry about daily chores, so I get more time to know myself. I also want to observe how I connect with new people in difficult circumstances. When I received the offer in May, my children reminded me that my biggest wealth has been my acting career. They recalled how people recognized me even in far-off places like Europe and how much respect I received. They said if I turned this down, I’d be letting go of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
When asked about the struggle of getting meaningful roles as a senior actor, a situation even Neena Gupta once spoke about, Kunickaa didn’t hold back.
“Honestly, this whole audition process feels pointless. Even in Hollywood, they ask for self-auditions. The industry has become very confusing. I have auditioned a few times when I really liked a role, but most of the parts offered are just not worth it. Tell me, how many strong roles are written for women anyway? Neenaji is phenomenal—what she’s doing is inspiring. I say this with love, but yes, I’m also a little jealous of her because she gets such powerful roles. And the truth is, nobody else could pull them off the way she does. But for the rest of us, finding good work is far from easy.”
