There are several actors who choose to leave their flourishing careers and take a break from acting. This one actor, who was the first actress in the country to receive an award at an international film festival, made a shocking decision when she was at the peak of her career. She is the late legendary actor, Suchitra Sen.
Suchitra Sen etched her name in golden letters as one of the world’s finest actors. In her three-decade-long career, she starred in over 30 films with numerous legendary actors, including Uttam Kumar, Dilip Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar, which cemented her fame in the industry. In 1963, she made history by becoming the first actress in the nation to win an award at an international film festival. However, she left the world stunned when she abruptly retired from the film industry, disappearing from public life for over three decades and becoming a mystery to the world.
After a few successful years, including the critical acclaim for Aandhi (1975), her career took a turn with the failure of Pranoy Pasha (1978). Additionally, the death of her husband, Dibanath Sen, in 1970 deeply affected her. Later, she rejected offers from renowned filmmakers like Satyajit Ray for Devi Chaudhurani and also refused Raj Kapoor’s offer for a film under his banner. She even abandoned the set of the film Nati Binodini, alongside Rajesh Khanna, midway. From then on, she chose to live in near total seclusion in her Kolkata home, where she devoted herself to the Ramakrishna Mission.
For 35 long years, she was never seen or heard from. Despite this, in 2005, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for her contribution to the cinema. However, she declined the honour and continued to remain out of sight. In 2014, she passed away at the age of 82, due to a heart attack, after a prolonged battle with a lung infection. Her death was condoled by several leaders, including Pranab Mukherjee, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi.
