From Rekha to Sridevi, there are many actresses who have gained massive fame and became superstars of Indian cinema. However, before them, there was an actress who ruled the hearts of audience with her undeniable beauty and acting skills. We are talking about none other than the evergreen Vyjayanthimala.
She is regarded as one of Indian cinema’s finest actresses and dancers. Vyjayanthimala made her acting debut at the age of 16 with the Tamil film Vaazhkai. Her first film in Hindi cinema was social guidance film Bahar but she gained stardom with the movie Naagin. In her career of 21 years, the actress starred in several hit films and ruled Hindi, Tamil and Telugu industry for over three years.
Moreover, despite coming from an orthodox Tamil Brahmin family, the actress didn’t shy away from wearing bikini for a film. She was the first South Indian actress to wear a swimsuit onscreen. While she receiving immense love in her professional life, she was equally for her personal life. The actress was often condemned for dating married men and was labelled the ‘home-breaker.’
She was linked with superstars like Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. Well, it was said that Dilip Kumar was so much in love with her that he handpicked the shade of sarees she would wear for each scene in their 1961 film Gunga Jumna.
Later, Vyjayanthimala married Raj Kapoor’s family doctor, Chamanlal Bali. While, according to reports, Bali was already married and had three children. But, he became so serious for Vyjayanthimala that he divorced his first wife and married the actress.
Well after marriage, Vyjayanthimala chose to gave up her acting career and move to Chennai. However, between 1968 and 1970, she shot only for those films which she had signed before her wedding.
