Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor starrer Raja Hindustani was one of the biggest hits of the 1990s. Released in 1996 and directed by Dharmesh Darshan, the film also featured Suresh Oberoi, Archana Puran Singh, Tiku Talsania, Mohnish Behl, Johnny Lever, and Farida Jalal in important roles. A young Kunal Kemmu also appeared as a child actor.
Made on a budget of Rs 5.75 crore, the film became a massive success, earning Rs 76.34 crore worldwide. It was the highest-grossing film of 1996 and ranked as the fourth highest-grossing film of the decade, following Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), and Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).
A big reason for the film’s success was its chart-topping soundtrack by Nadeem-Shravan. Songs like Pardesi Pardesi, Pucho Zara Pucho, Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein, Tere Ishq Mein Nachenge, and Kitna Pyaara Tujhe Rab Ne became huge hits. With over 1.10 crore copies sold, it was the third highest-selling album of the decade, after Aashiqui (1990) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).

Interestingly, before Karisma Kapoor was cast as the female lead, the role was offered to Manisha Koirala, Juhi Chawla, and Aishwarya Rai, all of whom turned it down. The film turned out to be a game-changer for Karisma, making her a superstar. She even won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her role as Aarti Sehgal.
Following Raja Hindustani, Karisma continued her success streak with blockbuster films like Biwi No.1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Hum Saath Saath Hain (all in 1999), and Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000). She also won a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).
