Born on 20 September 1948 in Mumbai, Mahesh Bhatt’s early life was far from easy. His father, Nanabhai Bhatt, a filmmaker, never married his mother, Shirin Mohammad Ali, leaving young Mahesh to face social taunts. Financial struggles only added to his determination to carve a name for himself.
With no strong connections in the film world, he walked into Mehboob Studio with sheer passion. To secure work, he told a small lie—that he knew director Raj Khosla. When questioned, Bhatt admitted the truth. Instead of being offended, Raj Khosla appreciated his honesty and hired him as an assistant. That moment marked the true beginning of Mahesh Bhatt’s cinematic journey.
Mahesh Bhatt made his directorial debut in 1974 with Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain. His breakthrough came with powerful films like Arth, Naam, Awargi, and Kashmakash. In 1984, his critically acclaimed film Saaransh was even sent to the Oscars, cementing his reputation as a filmmaker who reflected society’s raw truths.
In the 1990s, Bhatt launched his own banner, Vishesh Films, producing a string of successful movies such as Raaz, Murder, Jism, Jannat, and Aashiqui 2. These films not only did big business but also introduced fresh faces to the industry. His 1998 film Zakhm earned him a National Award, while Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Tamanna, and Gudia also brought critical recognition.
Over time, he directed or produced more than 80 hit films, proving his unmatched storytelling ability.
Off-screen, Mahesh Bhatt’s personal life was as eventful as his films. He married twice—first to Kiran Bhatt, with whom he had actress Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt, and later to actress Soni Razdan, with whom he shares daughters Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt.
While Shaheen chose a private life away from the industry, Pooja Bhatt made her mark in the 90s, and Alia Bhatt today is one of Bollywood’s leading actresses. Rahul, however, could not replicate the same success in films.
Mahesh Bhatt’s career has been decorated with accolades. He has won five National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, along with honours like the Zee Cine Award, Stardust Award, and IIFA Award. His ability to balance commercial hits with meaningful cinema remains rare in Bollywood.
Though Mahesh Bhatt has stepped away from active filmmaking, his stories, characters, and iconic films still resonate with audiences. From the soulful romance of Aashiqui to the emotional depth of Saaransh, his work continues to inspire both filmmakers and viewers.
