In 2025, the global film industry has experienced a scarcity of blockbuster hits, with many high-budget films underperforming at the box office. A notable example is the science-fiction thriller Mickey 17, directed by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho. Released in theaters on March 7, 2025, the film features a star-studded cast including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Despite critical acclaim, Mickey 17 struggled commercially.

Mickey 17 was made on a massive budget. However, despite its strong creative team, it could not perform well in cinemas and is now set to release on OTT after its theatrical failure. Mickey 17 is a black comedy film based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7. Released in theaters last week, the film struggled at the box office within just one week, prompting the makers to release it on OTT soon. On Sunday, the makers said that ‘Mickey 17’ is ready to stream online from March 25. It will hit Prime Video.

With a production budget of approximately $118 million and additional marketing expenses, the film’s total cost neared $198 million (Rs 8000 crore). To break even, it needed to gross around $300 million globally. However, within nine days of its release, Mickey 17 earned only $90.5 million worldwide, leading to significant financial losses for Warner Bros. In its second weekend, the film faced a steep 60% drop in domestic earnings, bringing its total to $33.2 million. Internationally, it garnered an additional $23 million, resulting in a global gross of $90.4 million.
