In 1954, Raj Kapoor arrived in Moscow without a visa, yet the Soviet authorities welcome him with open arms, a testament to his unmatched popularity. This adoration built by the release of his 1951 classic Awaara in Soviet Union. Premiering in Soviet theatres three years after its Indian release, Awaara became a sensation in the USSR.

The musical romance sold staggering 64 million tickets (INR 64,00,000), becoming the third most watched foreign film in Soviet history. Kapoor’s portrayal of a poor man striving for justice resonated deeply with Soviet audiences. They connected with its themes of class struggle, societal inequality and resilience.

The cast of Raj Kapoor’s Awaara (1951) featured Raj Kapoor himself as the lead, alongside Nargis in a memorable role as the female lead. Other cast members included Prithviraj Kapoor as the judge and (Raj Kapoor’s father in the film), Leela Chitnis as Kapoor’s mother and K.N. Singha as Jagga, the antagonist.
