While star kids may have an easier access into the industry, sustaining their stardom and winning the audience’s love is entirely based on their talent and hard work. Once such star kid, who eventually became a superstar, once faced hardships and had to sell his car to support his family. The actor we are talking about hailed from a family of superstars and delivered numerous hits and blockbusters. However, his mother initially didn’t want to have to him. He is none other than Shashi Kapoor.
Born on March 18, 1938, Shashi Kapoor was the youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni. He had two brothers – actors Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor – and a sister – Urmila Sial. When his mother became pregnant with him, she felt distressed, as she already had two children and didn’t want third. In 1955 interview with Filmibeat, Shashi revealed that his mother attempted to abort the pregnancy. She would fall of her bicycle, tumble down stairs, and even jump rope in an effort to end it. Despite all these attempts, she gave birth to a third son, who later go on became a superstar.
Shashi began his career as a child actor in Raj Kapoor’s directorial Aag (1948). His first film as an adult was Yash Chopra’s Dharmputra (1961). The actor starred in many films in his career such as Kanyadan (1968), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Prem Kahani and Deewaar (1975), Chakkar Pe Chakkar and Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Trishna and Heeralal Pannalal (1978), Kaala Patthar and Suhaag (1979).
In 1956, Shashi Kapoor met his wife, Jennifer Kendall, while both were involved with their respective theatre groups. The two faced their own challenges but had taken their relationship to the next level by tying the knot despite all odds. However, soon after their wedding, the couple faced some serious financial issues as they had fallen short of money and work. In an interview, Shashi’s son Kunal Kapoor mentioned that the late actor had to sell his sports car due to financial difficulties, and his wife, Jennifer, also began selling her valuables. However, actress Nanda played a pivotal role in helping him through this challenging time. The duo starred together in Jab Jab Phool Khile which became a turning point in Shashi Kapoor’s life.
1982 was a challenging year for Shashi Kapoor when he came to know that his wife had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Just two years later, Jennifer lost her battle with the illness, leaving Shashi shattered. This period of solitude and grief led him into a depression from which he never fully recovered. In 2017, the yesteryear star passed away at the age of 79 after suffering from prolonged illness.
