In the 1950s, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand were considered the three biggest stars in Bollywood. These actors were the superstars but decade after, this one actor challenged them, and in a style that nobody expected. He become as big as any other actor in Bollywood. Unfortunately, his success did not last that long.
We are talking about none other than Bharat Bhushan. This man from Meerut, entered into the film industry with the film Chitralekha, but that turned out to be a flop. Later he became a star after delivering hits like Basant Bahar, Phagun, Barsaat Ki Raat.
At one point he became one of the richest actors in Bollywood. Even though his stardom was fading, he was still considered one of the top stars in the industry, and ahead of the younger generation of actors, which included future superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna.
There was a time in Bharat Bhushan’s life when he was not able to sustain the success he received after Baiju Bawara. He entered into the production business with his brother and met with the massive monetary loss. He was also giving major flops at the box office. By the 70s, Bhushan fell into major debts and got bankrupt. To save himself from financial losses, the actor had to sell his prized bungalow as well as his expensive cars.
He was forced to take the status of junior artist with movies like Humshakal and Pyar ka Devta. At times he even played extras in big films for money. By 80s, he was able to come out of debts and recovered financially. However, he still lived a simple life.
Amitabh Bachchan once revealed in his blog that he saw Bhushan waiting in a queue to catch a bus. “One morning for work I saw Bharat Bhushan, the great romantic heart throb of the 50’s, hero of some of the most successful musicals of the times, standing in a queue at a bus stop! An ordinary citizen. Part of the crowd. Alone, unnoticed. No one recognizing him. No one knowing who he was.” Bhushan passed away on 27 January 1992 at the age of 72 in a forgotten and broken state.
