There was once an actress in our cinema whose heart longed for love and when love entered her life, fate seemed to turn against her. During a heartbreaking incident, her lover, a well-known director, died before they could marry. From that moment on, she chose to live her life in mourning. The actress is Nanda Karnataki.

The actress made her acting debut at the age of 7

Nanda ruled the film industry for nearly three decades and became one of the finest actors in the nation. Daughter of famous filmmaker, Vinayak Karnataki, she began her career as a child artist at the tender age of 7, debuting in her father’s film, Mandir in 1948. She was known as ‘Baby Nanda’ during her initial acting career as a child artist. Later, she worked with stars like Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Manoj Kumar and Shashi Kapoor. However, behind the success and rise to stardom, her love life was nothing but tumultuous.

The actress and her tragic love story

Even though she had kept a distance from love throughout her life, in the late ‘80s, the well-known director, Manmohan Desai, fell in love with the actor. However, he could not confess his feelings to her. It was also speculated that Manmohan Desai married Jeevan Prabha only because she looked like Nanda Karnataki.

Later, after his wife’s demise, the director and the actress came close again. At the age of 52, Nanda got engaged to Manmohan Desai. Nevertheless, life took a bizarre turn when the director died after falling from the terrace of his rented flat in Girgaon. According to reports, the railing, on which he was leaning, collapsed. After his death, Nanda was left heartbroken and was always seen in a white saree, as though she were a widow, even though she had never married.

Nanda Karnataki spent the rest of her days in solitude, and in 2014, she quietly bid farewell to the world at her Versova residence, aged 75, after suffering a heart attack.
