Geeta Dutt, born as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri was a legendary playback singer, celebrated for her music renditions all over. Born to a wealthy Zamindar family, her early years were spent in the beauty and calm of her rural surroundings. She moved to Mumbai with her family in the 1940s, where she was discovered by music director Hanuman Prasad.
In 1946, Geeta got her big break when she was offered an opportunity to sing in the mythological film Bhakta Prahlad with Prasad as a music director. At 16 she sung two superhit songs, starting her melodious singing career. In 1947, she rose to fame with the song Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya from the film Do Bhai (1947). Sooner, Geeta became one of the leading playback singers in the industry. Audience started to fall in love with her soulful voice and versatility.
Geeta’s life took an unexpected turn when she met young and promising director Guru Dutt. Their friendship soon blossomed into romance, culminating in their marriage on 26 May 1952. The couple was blessed with 3 children- Tarun, Arun, and Nina.

Unfortunately, Bollywood glitz and glamour took its toll on their marriage. Guru’s involvement with actress Waheeda Rehman impacted their relationship. When Geeta got to know about his extra-marital affair, she distanced herself from him. Their financial issues too peaked up and they had to vacate their bungalow. When Guru shifted to a rented flat, Geeta moved to her parents’ house along with her children.
As Guru Dutt’s career began to decline, his relationship with Waheeda Rehman also deteriorated. Waheeda reportedly distanced herself from him due to his struggles with alcoholism, anxiety and depression. He also attempted suicide twice, with both attempts being prevented by his staff members.
In 1964 Guru Dutt passed away due to a combination of alcohol and a sleeping pill overdose. His death, believed by many to be a suicide, leaving a deep impact on Geeta and pushing her into financial troubles. She was left alone with her three children. Her career also started taking a downward turn, however she attempted to revive it by performing at Durga Puja and stage shows.
On 20th July 1972, at the age of 41, Geeta Dutt’s melodious journey came to a tragic untimely end. She succumbed to cirrhosis of the liver in Mumbai, leaving behind her three children and her siblings.
