Some films don’t just succeed, they create legends. Chandni, released in 1989, was one such film. Directed by the legendary Yash Chopra, the movie starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna in lead roles, alongside veteran actresses Waheeda Rehman, Sushma Seth, and Achla Sachdev. A musical romantic, the film catapulted Sridevi to superstardom. It produced chart-topping songs like “Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Choodiyan Hain,” “Main Sasural Nahin Jaungi,” “Mitwa,” “Aa Meri Jaan,” and “Mehbooba,” composed by the iconic duo Shiv-Hari and sung by legends including Lata Mangeshkar, Pamela Chopra, and Vinod Rathod.
What made Chandni so special?
Beyond its music and romance, Chandni became a cult classic because of its storytelling and performances. Written by Kamna Chandra, who had previously delivered hits like Prem Rog, the film’s narrative and characters resonated with audiences nationwide. It earned the Best Popular Film award at the 37th National Film Awards and received ten nominations at the Filmfare Awards, including the win for Best Cinematography. Made on a budget of Rs 8 crore, it went on to earn Rs 27 crore at the box office, a remarkable feat at the time.
A tragic coincidence, loss of three superstars
Tragically, the film’s leading trio is no longer with us. Vinod Khanna passed away in 2017 after battling cancer. Just a year later, Sridevi died unexpectedly during a wedding in Dubai. Rishi Kapoor, too, succumbed to cancer in 2020. Within four years, the world lost three of Chandni’s iconic stars, leaving fans heartbroken. Even today, Sridevi is fondly remembered by audiences simply as “Chandni.”
Casting stories and near misses
Interestingly, Sridevi was not the first choice for Chandni. Yash Chopra initially offered the role to Rekha, who had previously played a character named Chandni in Silsila, and she declined. Other leading actresses, including Madhuri Dixit and Meenakshi Sheshadri, were approached for the smaller role of Devika but refused, unwilling to play a supporting role to Sridevi. Juhi Chawla eventually took the part and later gained recognition for her performance.
Legacy of Chandni
Even decades later, Chandni continues to be remembered for its timeless music, iconic performances, and tragic twist of fate. Its songs are still played, its characters still celebrated, and its stars continue to hold a special place in Bollywood history. The film not only made legends, it immortalised them.
