Despite facing challenges, this actress was often cast in stereotypical and maid roles. Frustrated with this, she stepped back from acting. However, she made a remarkable return by portraying Kranti Devi in Panchayat, showcasing her real talent.
Here we are talking about Sunita Rajwar, who is best known for her outstanding portrayal of Kranti Devi, has captivated audiences and now hailed as the “OTT star”. But there was a time when, despite her training at NSD, she could only land maid and servant roles. She became so disillusioned with these cliched parts that she decided to leave acting altogether.
Sunita developed a passion for films during her childhood. Every Friday, her father would take her to the cinema to watch a movie. The aspirations of becoming an actress led her to move from Haldwani to Delhi to enroll in NSD. However, upon arriving in Mumbai, she struggled to find roles that suited her. Often, after long waits, she was offered parts as a maid or a servant.
After getting frustrated with these roles, she distanced herself from the acting scene. Perhaps this decision turned her luck around. Subsequently, she landed the role of Bittu’s mother in TVF’s cult classic web series ‘Gullak.’
During an interview with She, The People, Sunita opened up on how she got the part in ‘Gullak. She said, “I was already working on a TV show when I got called for an audition. After the audition, I was called back and asked to redo five scenes. They called me a couple more times, and when they felt I was right for the role, I got it. We did some workshops, and then we started shooting. Apart from this, she was also appreciated for her portrayal of Jana’s mother in the ‘Stree’ franchise. Following that, she brought life to the character of Banarakas’s wife, Kranti Devi, in ‘Panchayat.’
Besides ‘Stree,’ Sunita has delivered remarkable performances in films like ‘Kedarnath,’ ‘Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local,’ and ‘Bala.’ Recently, her film ‘Santosh’ received a nomination in the Oscar foreign language film category. This film also led to her invitation to Cannes, where she gained international fame by walking the red carpet with all her charm.
