Salman Khan‘s Tubelight finally hit the theatres this Friday (June 23), but unfortunately the film opened to mixed reviews despite the aggressive promotions by Salman. The superstar managed to create a strong buzz around the film, as he was taping promotional episodes on every other reality TV show and giving interviews to numerous media outlets. We expected the film to open to at least 80 percent occupancy, but major thanks to the bad reviews, many chose not to watch the film on the first day, as it recorded only 40 percent occupancy in the morning shows. As a result, the Kabir Khan directorial didn’t make enough money on its first day as it earned only Rs 21.15 crore at the domestic box office. Agreed that Salman managed to outdo the first day box office collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, which made 20.42 crore on day one, but with Tubelight, Salman couldn’t break the records that he created with his films that released during Eid.Also Read - Salman Khan Objects to Neighbour Commenting on His Religion: 'My Father is Muslim, Mother is Hindu, Brothers Married Hindus' - Defamation Case Update
While Ek Tha Tiger (2012) earned Rs 32.93 crore on its first day, Kick (2014) collected Rs 26.40 crore. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), which was also directed by Kabir managed to rake Rs 27.25 crore, while Sultan (2016) was the highest of them all, as it earned Rs 36.54 crore on its first day. Clearly, bad reviews have affected Tubelight, and Salman might not be bothered about the negative reviews, but looking at the box office figures of Tubelight, he must be worried. But then again, it was just the first day. The weekend is here and one can surely expect Tubelight to pick up over the course of today and tomorrow. Also it’s still the pre-Eid period as the festival has not kicked in yet. So one entire community is still not watching the film, as they will flock to the theatres either on Monday or Tuesday, which will help Tubelight rake in more moolah.
