Actor Sohum Shah’s historical period fantasy horror Tumbbad showed an upward trend on its second day at the box office. The movie, directed by debutant Rahi Anil Barve, did not do much business on the first day of its release, earning just Rs 65 lakh. But it more than doubled the amount on the second day after earning around Rs 1.15 crore. The movie had got glowing reviews from critics, but did not manage to draw in the audience on the first day of its release, which was on October 12. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted about its poor performance and said that it would need to witness a miraculous growth in the coming days. It seems the movie has done just that on the second day. Also Read - To quit 'Tumbbad' and make another film was never a thought, says Sohum Shah
Tumbbad, which was jointly produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah, is based in 19th-century India, about a scheming man who becomes obsessed with finding the mythical treasure of his ancestors. It revolves around a lore narrated by the grandmother of the family, about Hastar the demon-god and how he was banished from the face of the Earth for being greedy.
The movie also got glowing reviews from many quarters, with Sohum saying the best part about his Tumbbad journey was the opportunity to be in different settings – from playing the dhoti clad Vinayak Rao to walking the red carpet.
Tumbbad premiered in the critics’ week section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival, becoming the first Indian film to be screened there. It was also screened at the 2018 Fantastic Fest and the El Gouna Film Festival.
