Varanasi is an upcoming Telugu mega-project directed by SS Rajamouli, with the screenplay jointly crafted by him and his father, V. Vijayendra Prasad. The film features Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in prominent roles. Positioned as a globe-spanning action adventure infused with Indian cultural layers, the film reportedly draws inspiration from the mood and storytelling style of classic adventure sagas. The movie is slated for a grand Sankranti 2027 release. Based on multiple media reports, here’s a breakdown of what the lead actors and the filmmaker are reportedly earning from this magnum opus.
The long-awaited title reveal was made during the spectacular Globetrotter event at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. A massive screen showcased the teaser, offering fans their first glimpse of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra. Priyanka Chopra takes on the role of Mandakini, while Prithviraj Sukumaran steps into the character of Kumbha in Rajamouli’s high-stakes adventure drama.
Marking Mahesh Babu’s 29th outing as a lead hero, the film was initially developed under the working title Globetrotter. The project is being mounted on an eye-watering budget of Rs 1,200 crore (approx. US$140 million), excluding promotional costs—placing it as India’s second most expensive film ever, only behind Ramayana.
Rajamouli, known as one of India’s most highly paid filmmakers, isn’t taking a direct fee for this project. Instead, he is reportedly opting for a profit-sharing model, ensuring he earns only if the film performs well. As per IMDb data, Rajamouli typically makes around Rs 200 crore per film, but for Varanasi, his earnings will depend entirely on the movie’s success.
According to a report by Koimoi, Mahesh Babu—much like Rajamouli—is not drawing any upfront payment. He will reportedly receive compensation only if the film turns profitable, making this one of the most unusual remuneration structures in Telugu cinema.
Priyanka Chopra has reportedly become the highest-paid actress in India with Varanasi. Multiple reports claim she is earning around Rs 30 crore for the project, placing her ahead of Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt in terms of current Bollywood pay scales.
Prithviraj’s typical remuneration ranges between Rs 4–10 crore, according to Financial Express. While the exact figure for Varanasi hasn’t been officially disclosed, DNA suggests he may be earning over Rs 10 crore for this major role.
