Veerappan: Censor board cuts reference to LTTE Chief Prabhakaran as Rajiv Gandhi’s assassin

Ram Gopal Varma’s movie Veerappan that is releasing on May 27 has been made a victim of the censors, or so it is being claimed by the filmmaker. Bollywood Hungama reports that the movie, based on dead sandalwood smuggler Veerappan’s life, has been given further cuts after being rated ‘A’ by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

One of the main scenes that have been cut shows Veerappan (played by actor Sandeep Bhardwaj) claiming that it was Velupillai Prabhakaran, the slain Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief who had a part in the assassination of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Ram Gopal Varma revealed to the website that he tried to reason with the censor board officials that the Supreme Court of India had already passed a judgement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, naming Prabhakaran in the case. But apparently the censor board officials told RGV that some Tamil groups may create problems because of this particular dialogue of Veerappan. Another scene that has been changed a bit is the one involving the killing of a baby. Veerappan also stars Sachiin J Joshi, Usha Jadhav and Lisa Ray, among others. Watch this space for the review of the film.
