After the release of Animal, Bobby Deol is back in the spotlight, this time for his role in Aryan Khan’s web series The Bads of Bollywood. While the show has grabbed attention, Bobby has opened up about a much more personal battle: his struggle with alcohol. The actor revealed that his drinking escalated during a period when he had no film projects, calling it the worst time of his life.
During this dark phase, Bobby admitted that even his family was afraid to approach him. “I was working for my family, but when I looked into their eyes, I could see both fear and love,” he shared, highlighting the tension alcohol created in his home. He also noted that despite family pressures, his elder brother never let the hardships directly impact them, always hiding his own pain to protect the family.
Bobby reflected on how alcohol affected his mind and behaviour, especially around his closest family members. “Only your closest ones see the worst side of you when you’re struggling with addiction,” he said, explaining that his wife witnessed his worst moments, anger, bad behaviour, and senseless arguments. He added, “That’s what alcohol does—it messes with your mind. You don’t even realise what you’re saying. People think drinking makes you speak the truth, but it doesn’t. It just brings out the pain you’ve been carrying inside.”
The actor confessed that he used alcohol as an emotional crutch, wrongly believing it allowed him to speak his truth. Instead, it only amplified his inner pain and projected anger outward, ultimately pushing him to quit. Bobby proudly revealed that he has been sober for over a year now.
Bobby also talked about how personal and family challenges worsened his addiction. “I was going through a bad time. My brother was in trouble too, and my father wasn’t working. The house was full of tension,” he said, recalling the heightened stress at home during those difficult years. Feeling misunderstood and undervalued, Bobby admitted that he began blaming the world for everything, a mindset that weakened him emotionally and kept him dependent on alcohol.
Ultimately, Bobby credited self-awareness and the desire to protect his family for helping him turn a corner. The actor explained that sobriety allowed him to channel his emotions more constructively, rebuild relationships, and focus on his craft.
With The Bads of Bollywood marking a fresh phase in his career, Bobby Deol is not only earning recognition for his acting but also demonstrating that personal battles can be overcome with determination and support.
