Bollywood actress Richa Chadha will essay the role of real-life adult film star Shakeela in her biopic which will be helmed by Indrajit Lankesh. Shakeela is one of the biggest stars of the 90s from Kerala and has acted in several adult films in languages spanning Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, too portrayed Silk Smitha in the 2012 film The Dirty Picture, where she wowed us with her stellar performance and won our hearts. While many wondered as to why was there a need to make a film on a B-grade actress, the film turned out to be one of the best films of that year and was well-received at the box office too. Shakeela, who ruled the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu film industry in the 90s, is best known for her works in softcore movies, B-movies, and mainstream cinema. Calling Silk her inspiration, Shakeela got a breakthrough in her career with a soft-core film called, Kinnarathumbikal in 2000. The actress, who debuted in the Tamil soft porn movie Playgirls at the age of 20 as a supporting actress, rose to fame after Silk’s career was dipping. A spokesperson for Chadha said in a statement, “The film is the story of Shakeela, one of the most famous actors from Malayalam cinema from the 90s who rose to a spectacular amount of fame. The film will go on floors next month and will chronicle the life of Shakeela, who entered the film business at the age of 16 and traces her life journey from there. He further added, “The film’s script was exciting and is a great story to tell and the story will make for a great watch for the audience. The preparations will begin soon and the film should be going on floors in end April or May.” Watch this space for further updates.
