Why On Air with AIB should be renewed for season two
On Air with AIB's hosts Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Ashish Shakya, and Rohan Joshi are dauntless in their mockery, they openly criticise everyone, and they are not ashamed to crack a joke on themselves
Dec 28: Hotstar’s comedy-news bulletin show, On Air with AIB, completed its 9th episode, and the show will soon come to end of its first season. Ashish Shakya, Rohan Joshi hosts the English version of the show, and Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba hosts Hindi version. On Air with AIB is intended to be a lighthearted parody of recent. Also, each show focuses on one particular issue like Fire Safety protocols, HIV/AIDS, Open spaces, etc. Straight off, the show is trying to ape HBO’s Last Week Tonight by Jon Oliver. The ridicule, the presentation, and even the live audience substantiate this assertion that the show Last Week Tonight inspired. While the hosts cannot match Jon Oliver’s energy and timing, they are hilarious nonetheless.
Jon Oliver’s show is about the issues that plague USA, at the same time he also touches on global news. He is not afraid to voice his opinion; his perfect comic timing makes one hell of a travesty to watch. Nothing is off limits for Jon Oliver as goes indepth on every issue like FIFA, Miss America Pageants, and so on. He presents his audiences with facts that he and his team obtained to bolster his opinions. AIB is doing the same; they direct the audiences at important issues that are affecting India but not widely known as the Whistleblower Act in the Parliament.
Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Ashish Shakya, and Rohan Joshi are dauntless in their mockery, they openly criticise everyone from Politicians to Bollywood movie stars, and they are not ashamed to crack a joke on themselves. AIB still curses, a lot, during the show that draws flak from conservatives, but they kept their show running, heedless of the slander they received. They even shared the posts that tried to defame On Air with AIB on their Facebook and Twitter page.
Now that the show’s season one is coming to an end, the question of renewal of On Air with AIB will arise. And the show should be renewed. No doubt, their language is too foul for young audiences; their anecdotes are not for families to enjoy. The actual of an audience of the show are Indians in their 20s, the youngsters who also use foul language. The ones also know that there is something wrong in the Indian system. AIB is using their slogan ‘Tragedy me Comedy’ in a real sense, because duh they are Stand-up comedians.
As they use humor and satire to reach their target audiences, spreading awareness of the social atrocities rotting our India. Obviously many of the things that they talk about are not affecting the common man yet. We are Indians though, we do not read about Fire Safety until there is a fire, we do not worry about Whistleblowers until we are the one blowing the whistle. Let us not discuss HIV/AIDS because even after so much awareness, that topic is a stigma among the masses.
This is why their show should be renewed, as On Air with AIB might succeed where words fail. Their show might be successful in shaming and ridiculing people to a point where people decide to change and talk real. Regardless of the method, that is what is important: a better India.
