The 1993 Mumbai explosions continue to throw a dismal shadow over the city’s history. In a recent interview, actor Akashdeep Sabir revealed that several Hindi film stars were not even in the city when the tragedy struck. He revealed that Shah Rukh Khan, Dilip Kumar, Raj Babbar, and Mithun Chakraborty were all in Dubai for a celebrity cricket tournament at the time. Recalling that the event was a flop since people declined to attend, he revealed that Shah Rukh remained in Dubai for a few days after the match. Read on.

Talking to Lehren Retro Akashdeep said, “This was the ’93 Bombay blasts so it became an issue when… we were scheduled to have this match and we were expecting a full house because we had every leading actor from Dilip saab to Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, everybody was there playing the match. And because of this issue, I believe, there was an announcement in Dubai that nobody will go for the match.”

According to Akashdeep, Dilip Kumar attempted to make requests in hopes that people would attend, but it was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, no one showed up, so the match had to go ahead. The promoter was in such bad shape that he declared, “Guys, it’s time to leave,” the following morning. I’ve lost everything, so take earlier flights and go out. He remarked, “I can’t afford to let people stay for another day.” Shah Rukh’s wife, Gauri Khan, was with him, according to Akashdeep, and they intended to remain there for a few more days. Sheeba, who is now married to Akashdeep and was a well-known actor at the time, offered the pair her house.

Shah Rukh was on the brink of becoming a star at the time, according to Akashdeep. This was the period when Baazigar was released. According to him, the film had not yet developed into the cult movie that it is today. The bombings occurred in March 1993, and Baazigar was released in November of the same year. Sheeba stepped in and gave Shah Rukh her residence when he expressed a desire to remain in the city for a few days, he continued. I have a beautiful apartment across the lake; you are welcome to come and stay,” Sheeba remarked. He was quite sweet. The house she owned had four or five bedrooms, he said. Sheeba described Shah Rukh as a “lovely” visitor.
