70th Army Day 2018: Significance About The Day Honoring Indian Army
On this day in 1948, Cariappa took over the post from British Army general Sir Francis Butcher.
Every year on January 15, Army Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. This year we are celebrating the 70th Indian Army day. The day commemorates the brave soldiers for their sacrifice to the nation. The day is observed in the memory of our nation’s first Indian Army Commander in chief, Lt General Kodandera Madappa Cariappa after independence. On this day in 1948, Cariappa took over the post from British Army general Sir Francis Butcher. Although our nation got independence on August 15, 1947, it took one more year for an Indian to take charge of the Army. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to extend greetings to the soldiers and their families and paid salute to the army.
“On Army Day, I convey greetings to the soldiers, veterans and their families. Every citizen of India has unwavering trust and pride in our Army, which protects the nation and is also at the forefront of humanitarian efforts during times of natural disasters and other accidents,” he wrote on Twitter. Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley wrote on Twitter: “On #ArmyDay we remember the indomitable courage and supreme sacrifices of our soldiers & salute their exemplary dedication & bravery. #ArmyDay2018”.Here are the tweets:

On this day different military shows, parades and exhibitions showcasing achievements and new technologies are carried out. Bravery awards including the unit credentials and Sena medals are also distributed to valiant soldiers today. Also, today soldiers take the pledge on staying dedicated. Indian army pays tribute to all soldiers who sacrificed themselves for the nation at the “Amar Jawan Jyoti” at India Gate in New Delhi.
