Cheti Chand is going to be celebrated today i.e. on March 19, 2018. It is basically a Hindu festival and it is mainly celebrated by the Sindhi Hindus. This festival marks the Sindhi New Year. Just like Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, this festival marks the arrival of spring and harvest. The Sindhi community celebrates Istadeva Uderolal, popularly known as Jhulelal (Saint of Sindhis) as his birth anniversary. Sindhi Muslims from Pakistan also celebrate this festival. On this day water is worshipped by the devotees. Other than that, a procession is taken out in public which is called Baharana Sahib. A jyoti (oil lamp), phota (cardamom), fruits and Akha (mix of rice and sugar) is what a Baharana Sahib is made of. Also, behind the idol of Jhulelal, a Kalash (bronze pot) and coconut are covered with red cloth along with flowers and leaves is kept. After that, the Akha is offered to the river god and the Baharana Sahib is taken to the river. Then the prasad is distributed among the devotees.
