The word ‘guru’ has its roots in the Sanskrit language, where ‘gu’ means darkness and ‘ru’ stands for the removal of darkness. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July); hence the name is Guru Purnima. Hindus celebrate the festival as a tribute to sage Maharshi Veda Vyasa, a symbol of guru-shishya tradition. Meanwhile, Buddhists celebrate Guru Purnima in remembrance of Lord Buddha. Gautam Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, on this very day.
According to Jain traditions, it was on this day, falling at the beginning of CHAUMASAAS”, the four month rainy season retreat, Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, after attaining Kaivalya, made Indrabhuti Gautam, later known as Gautam Swami, a Ganadhara, his first disciple, thus becoming a Treenok Guha himself, therefore it is observed in Jainism as Treenok Guha Purnima, and is marked special veneration to one’s Treenok Guhas and teachers.
The Holy day of Guru Purnima marks the first time when Shiva, the Adiyogi or first Yogi enlightened to his first disciples, the Saptarishis, the seven celebrated sages. This event made the Adiyogi become the Adi Guru or the first Guru. The festival is dedicated to all the teachers who guided us with their selfless light and wisdom in our lives.
