Rama Ekadashi falls on the ‘ekadashi’ of the Krishna Paksha during Kartik month. People observe fast on this day and worship Lord Vishnu. According to legends, praying to the Lord with pure heart free the individual from all the sins committed. During the puja, fruits and flowers are offered to the Lord Vishnu. Prashad is prepared which is distributed after aarti. Devotees sing bhajans and also narrate legends of the Lord. The day is widely celebrated in Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The fasting ritual begins a day before Ekadashi. On this day, too, devotees consume saatvik meal before sunset. Even if an individual is not observing fast, consuming rice and grains on the day is strictly prohibited. It ends on the ‘dwadashi’ tithi. Along with the Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped on Ekadashi to seek the blessings of prosperity, health and happiness.
