High cholesterol is build up of waxy substance in ther arteries that may block the health flow of oxygen and blood. Hence, it puts pressure on the heart, arteries, blood vessels leading to rise in blood pressure levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often referred to as “bad cholesterol,” can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke. While many people are aware of the long-term risks associated with high LDL levels, certain signs and symptoms may manifest at night, often when the body is at rest.

High Cholesterol Symptoms at Night

  1. Chest Pain or Discomfort: One of the most common yet alarming signs of high LDL  is chest pain, often described as a ‘feeling of tightness or pressure’. This discomfort may become more pronounced at night, especially if you lie down. It can signify that the heart is struggling due to poor circulation, often caused by plaque buildup in the arteries.
  2. Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances: Individuals with elevated cholesterol levels may experience unexplained fatigue, particularly at night. This can lead to restless nights and difficulty falling or staying asleep. When the body is unable to circulate blood efficiently due to blocked arteries, it can result in lower energy levels.
  3. Leg Pain or Discomfort (Claudication): Claudication is a condition characterised by pain or discomfort in the legs, often triggered by physical activity but worsening at night when the body is at rest. High LDL can lead to peripheral artery disease (PAD), where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. This condition may manifest as cramping or heaviness in the legs, especially during nighttime relaxation.
  4. Numbness or Tingling in Limbs: Another symptom associated with bad cholesterol levels is numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. This symptom can be a sign of nerve damage due to poor circulation, which is linked to high cholesterol levels. If these sensations persist, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional.
  5. Skin Changes: Xanthomas are yellowish deposits of cholesterol that can form on the skin, particularly around the eyes, elbows, and knees. While these lesions may not be exclusively nocturnal, they can become more noticeable during the evening when the skin is at rest. The appearance of xanthomas is a clear sign of high cholesterol levels and warrants further investigation by a healthcare professional.

Recognising the signs and symptoms of high LDL is crucial for early intervention and management. These symptoms may also be due to other health problems. And getting cholesterol check up is the actual way to understand LDL and HDL level in your body. These all Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and medication if necessary, can help lower LDL cholesterol levels and improve overall health.
