At SN Medical College in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, doctors are witnessing a steady rise in bone cancer cases, particularly among children and senior citizens. Dr Amrit Goyal, Head of the Orthopaedic Department at the institute, emphasised that timely detection and treatment can make all the difference between recovery and life-threatening complications.
Bone cancer, he explained, is most frequently diagnosed in two age groups, young children and older adults. Its early symptoms include persistent bone pain, swelling, tenderness, and an increased risk of fractures. Despite these warning signs, many patients tend to ignore the problem until it worsens.
What are the early signs of bone Cancer?
According to Dr Goyal, the most common symptom is unrelenting pain in the bones, often accompanied by swelling or stiffness around the affected area. He cautioned that dismissing these signs as “minor” aches can prove dangerous.
“Patients often delay consulting a doctor. They take painkillers or home remedies for temporary relief, but that doesn’t treat the root cause,” he said. “A little carelessness can turn fatal. If symptoms persist, one must visit an orthopaedic specialist immediately.”
How is bone Cancer diagnosed and treated?
Dr Goyal explained that diagnostic tools such as X-rays and MRIs are crucial for confirming the presence of bone cancer. “These tests help us identify the exact location and severity of the disease. With proper diagnosis, effective treatment can begin without delay,” he said.
He added that SN Medical College is well-equipped with the necessary facilities to handle such cases. “We’ve treated many patients successfully here. The key is to start treatment early,” he added.
Why are children and the elderly at higher risk?
Dr Goyal noted that children up to 17 years of age are more prone to bone cancer since their bones are still developing. “Their bones are growing rapidly, and this makes them more vulnerable. But the good news is that if diagnosed early, children respond well to medical treatment,” he said.
He further pointed out that people above 60 are also at high risk. “In older adults, the disease progresses quickly, and treatment becomes complex. However, with timely surgery and care, the spread of cancer can be controlled. In some cases, the affected bone area is removed and replaced with a prosthetic limb,” he explained.
Why early detection matters
Dr Goyal repeatedly stressed the importance of early detection. Once the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it becomes extremely difficult to control. “We continue to treat many such patients at SN Medical College, and our focus remains on raising awareness so people don’t ignore initial symptoms,” he said.
Timely consultation, diagnosis, and treatment can significantly improve survival rates, a message Dr Goyal hopes more people will take seriously.
