Covid cases spike in India: How severe it is? Symptoms, precautions and other key things to know

There has been a significant spike in COVID-19 cases in India, with 358 new infections recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. There are currently 6,491 active COVID-19 cases, and 6,861 patients have recovered as of Monday morning.

Many people are questioning what symptoms to look out for, whether booster doses are necessary, and whether a new pandemic wave is imminent as the number of cases has surpassed 6,000 once more. We consulted with Dr. Laxman Jessani, Consultant in Infectious Diseases, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, and Dr. Diksha Goyal, Consultant in Internal Medicine at Marengo Asia Hospitals in Gurugram, to resolve the confusion, and they both provided insightful information.

Warning signs of COVID-19

According to Dr. Goyal, the most prevalent symptoms observed in outpatient departments (OPD) at the moment are quite similar to those of previous COVID-19 waves. “The most common symptoms are high-grade fever, sore throat, fatigue, and cough,” she says.

Despite their familiarity, these symptoms are nonetheless crucial early indicators of infection that must not be disregarded. Dr. Goyal continues, “Patients often come in complaining about a sudden onset of fever that doesn’t go away with simple medication.”

Other COVID-19 signs to be aware of

Keeping these common symptoms aside, there are other signs to be aware of. Reportedly, She said, “Body aches, headaches, nasal stuffiness, and loss of taste or smell are also frequently reported. Some patients experience diarrhoea and breathlessness, which need closer monitoring.”

Additional difficulties may arise for those with compromised immune systems or underlying medical issues. Dr. Goyal warns, “Chest pain has been reported in some cases, particularly among those with pre-existing illnesses or compromised immunity. Such symptoms should prompt immediate medical consultation.”

Do you need a booster shot?

Many people are wondering if booster shots are required in light of the recent increase of COVID-19 cases. Dr. Goyal confirms, “Yes, booster shots are especially important for high-risk groups such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and healthcare workers.”

Booster doses, she continues, assist in bolstering the immunological response that may have diminished since the first rounds of vaccinations. She further added, “Boosters reduce the risk of severe infection, including from emerging variants. They are a key tool in keeping vulnerable populations safe.”

Is the pandemic wave coming back again?

Whether India is seeing another significant COVID-19 wave is one of the main worries. “While the current surge in cases is concerning, we believe that the existing vaccines and public health measures are sufficient to prevent a widespread pandemic,” Dr Jessani said.

Dr. Goyal says there is no need to panic just yet. She said, “Although the number of cases is increasing, it seems that this is a mild wave rather than a serious pandemic surge.”
