Kawasaki disease is a rare condition that primarily affects children under the age of five. While the exact cause remains unknown, it is believed to be linked to an abnormal immune response triggered by infections. The disease is serious and, if left untreated, can lead to complications such as coronary artery aneurysms. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to preventing long-term damage.
Symptoms of Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki disease typically manifests in phases, with symptoms developing over days or weeks. The most common symptoms include:
•Prolonged Fever: High fever lasting more than five days, unresponsive to typical fever medications.
•Skin Rashes: Red rashes that may appear on the torso, arms, or legs.
•Red Eyes: Bloodshot eyes without discharge
•Swollen Hands and Feet: Often accompanied by redness and, later, peeling skin around the fingertips and toes.
•Red, Cracked Lips and Strawberry Tongue: Dry, cracked lips and a bright red tongue resembling the texture of a strawberry.
•Swollen Lymph Nodes: Enlarged lymph nodes, particularly in the neck.
•Irritability and Fatigue: Affected children may appear unusually irritable and tired.
A Father’s Worst Nightmare
Munawar recalled how his son’s health deteriorated over two to three days. Despite initial efforts to treat the symptoms at home, the condition worsened, prompting a hospital visit. There, doctors diagnosed Kawasaki disease and explained that three critical injections, each costing ₹25,000, were needed immediately. The total cost of ₹75,000 was overwhelming, especially when Munawar only had ₹700-₹800 in his wallet at the time.
“The situation still scares me to this day,” Munawar shared. He maintained composure in front of the doctor, assuring them he would arrange the funds. However, as he stepped out, the gravity of the situation hit him hard. “I froze for 30-40 minutes, unable to think. It was the heaviest moment of my life,” he admitted.
A Race Against Time
With no time to spare, Munawar made over ten frantic calls to friends and acquaintances. Eventually, a former workplace lent him the required amount. Munawar recounted traveling to Mumbai Central to collect the money and returning to the hospital within three hours. Although the injections were administered in time, the experience left him grappling with the burden of borrowing money. “While I was thankful, I couldn’t smile because it wasn’t my money,” he confessed.
This life-altering episode taught Munawar the importance of financial preparedness. “After that day, I ensured my finances would always be sufficient to handle emergencies,” he said, emphasizing the need for a safety net during unforeseen situations.
