Zakir Hussain passed away at 73

The passing away of a legendary instrument player has left a void. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away in the early hours of Monday in San Francisco at 73. A prolific composer, his illustrious career is adorned his hall of fame with several accolades – including two Grammy Awards, titles and lost of respect. He was bestowed with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri in India for his extraordinary contribution and impact in the field of music globally.

Hussain died due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), according to his family. He had been hospitalised for the last two weeks and was later taken to the ICU as his condition deteriorated.

What is IPF, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?

• Environmental Factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as asbestos, silica dust, and certain chemicals, has been linked to an increased risk of IPF. Occupational exposure in settings like construction and manufacturing may contribute to the disease.
• Smoking: Cigarette smoking is a significant risk factor for IPF. Smokers are more likely to develop lung fibrosis, and the risk increases with the duration and intensity of smoking.
• Age: IPF primarily affects older adults, with most diagnoses occurring in individuals aged 50 or older. The risk of developing the disease increases with age.

Symptoms

The symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis can be subtle at first and may worsen over time. Here are few common signs and symptoms that might show for some people:

• Shortness of Breath
• Chronic Dry Cough
• Fatigue
• Unexplained Weight Loss
• Clubbing of Fingers or Toes

Several of these symptoms may also be indicative of other issues, when looked at in isolation. However,  when any of these persist in combination or singularly for longer duration, it is better to get checked.

Treatment

While there is currently no cure for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, several treatment options can help manage the condition. According to the severity of the issues, doctors may prescribe a certains course of action. Oxygen therapy, lung transplant are few options.
