28-days-to-go-kapli-world-cup

It is 28 days to ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and we bring to you one of the glorious days of Indian cricket- 25 June 1983, when Kapil Dev’s men stunned the mighty West Indian team in the final of 1983 World Cup at Lord’s.

India had already defeated West Indies in the league stage of the tournament, but meeting them in the finals was altogether a different challenge.  As West Indies were playing their third consecutive World Cup final, having won the previous two, red-hot favourites they were.

Put to bat, India were bundled out for just 183 runs in 54.4 overs (it was a 60-over affair back then). Indian batsmen had no answer to the fiery bowling of Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Joel Garner, who shared eight wickets between them. The target of 184 seemed to be an easy walk in the park for defending champions West Indies. All India needed was an aspiring spell from the bowlers to stop West Indies from chasing down the modest target. And, fortunately for India, things went exactly their way. Also Read: ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Schedule in IST: Time Table, Fixture & Venue Details of all WC 2015 Matches

After Balwinder Sandhu made early inroad into West Indies top order, Madan Lal, Roger Binny, Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath, scalped the rest wickets to enable India win their first World Cup. West Indies were bowled out for 140 and lost the game by 43 runs. Amarnath, who registered figures of 3-12 in seven overs and scored valuable 26 runs batting at number three, was adjudged Man of the Match.

Watch and relive the final moments of that victory as India for the first time had their hands on the coveted trophy. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Schedule: Complete Fixtures & Time Table of all Cricket World Cup 2015 Matches
