In the match 34 of Cricket World Cup 2015, defending champions India recorded a massive victory over Ireland in the Group B fixture showdown at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. Apart from the first few overs of the match, it was table leaders India who dominated the Irish side throughout the match. Riding high on opening batsmen record partnership especially Shikhar Dhawan‘s fiery 85 balls 100 knock, India remained unbeaten in the tournament so far. Take a look at the five major highlights of the India vs Ireland clash.
1. India’s record-breaking opening partnership at ICC World Cup tournament
India openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan took the Irish bowlers to the cleaners in their Pool A Match 34 at Seddon Park in Hamilton on March 10. The opening stand of 174 runs saw the previous record by an Indian opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja being quashed. Sachin Tendulkar along with Ajay Jadeja had hit 163 runs in their opening partnership in World Cup 1996. After a cautious start, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan took India to the score of 174 runs only in 23 overs. Sharma hit three fours and as many sixes in his innings of 64 runs off 66 deliveries. Dhawan got out as soon as he scored a century. (View pictures: India vs Ireland, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Picture Gallery: IND stroll to convincing win against IRE)
2. Another feather in Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s cap
With a win over Ireland at Seddon Park, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni added another feather to his cap. Dhoni now has a record of winning 9 matches in a row in an ICC World Cup tournament. Dhoni is now tied on second spot with West Indies’ legend Clive Llyod who also has 9 consecutive wins against his name. On the top of the ladder is Australian great Ricky Ponting who won 24 matches in a row sparring over three World Cups- 2003, 2007, 2011.
3.Ireland openers defy Indian bowling attack
Ireland openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling began aggressively against a rusty Indian bowling attack. The first five overs of the innings saw Ireland score at the run rate of over 6 runs per over. The next 10 overs saw Irish batsmen milking the Indian bowlers as they went on to score at 6 runs per over. Ireland skipper Potterfield and Stirling kept the bowling attack on bay and with the ease which they were batting was scintillating. Not till the last ball of 15 over, Ireland lost a wicket and that is what was surprising. 4.Indian spinners spin Irish batsmen in their web
The second half of the Ireland innings was as bad as the first half was good. The Irish batsmen gave the good start provided by the openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling. Soon after Stirling got out during the fag end of drinks break, it was a downslide for the Ireland side. The middle order that comprised of Ed Joyce, Balbirinie, Wilson, and Kevin O’Brien, failed to deliver and the side folded on 259 runs. The only saving grace in the line-up was Naill O’Brien who hit 75 runs in as many deliveries. The spinners pulled it back, what the pace bowlers had given it away.
5. Shikhar Dhawan hits another century in ICC World Cup 2015
Man of the Match Shikhar Dhawan played a brilliant knock of hundred which saw India scamper through the target of 260. Dhawan hit 11 fours and five huge sixes in his innings of 100 runs off mere 85 balls. This is second century of 2015 cricket world cup after he scored a match winning knock of 137 against South Africa in Melbourne. With Tuesday’s knock he takes second place of the leading run scorers list of the tournament.
