Kane Williamson gave a couple of tough chances to the Sri Lankan fielders, which they could not latch on to but after the classy New Zealand No 3 reached a fifty, he stepped down the track to Jeevan Mendis to clear the ropes. Brendon McCullum went hammer and tongs at the Sri Lankan bowling and it looked like he was going to blow them out of the contest. Rangana Herath’s flighted delivery was smashed to the long on boundary and it looked like it was going for a six before Jeevan Mendis took a safe catch. Martin Guptill meanwhile, was also dangerous and was at his attacking best but played second fiddle to McCullum.
