Amethi constituency became one of the most discussed and interesting fights among India’s Lok Sabha history, as Rahul Gandhi’s biggest political rival Smriti Irani, Announced her candidacy from Amethi.
Members of Gandhi family including Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi were sent to the parliament from this constituency earlier. Considering such a long attachment of the Gandhi family with this constituency, when BJP leader Smriti Irani challenged Rahul Gandhi since 2014 lok sabha elections, Amethi came into the limelight again.

Rahul Gandhi, was elected from the constituency for the first time in 2004. He secured 390,179 votes in 2004 and 464,195 votes in 2009. From Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi till Rahul Gandhi himself, the Nehru-Gandhi family was a winner from this constituency. He was the fourth MP from the Nehru–Gandhi family since 1980 to represent the seat.
It was very difficult for anyone to challenge the Gandhi family in Amethi, which was done by Smriti Irani for the first time in 2014. Though Rahul Gandhi defeated Smriti Irani by a margin of 1.07 lakh votes, still it was a tough fight for Rahul Gandhi as his vote share came down marginally as compared to the 2009s election.
However after consistent attacks on Rahul Gandhi for next five years, Smrti Irani did full-fledged preparations in Amethi in next 5 years. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated Rahul Gandhi by 468,514 votes. Rahul Gandhi was already fighting from Wayanad constituency from Kerala who sent him to the parliament in 2019.
Out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Amethi is the most discussed constituency in all the Lok Sabha elections. As people have always elected Gandhi family members from this constituency. In 1980 Sanjay Gandhi won an election from the same constituency.
Rajiv Gandhi also won from the same constituency till his assasination. On 21 May 1991 a few days after the polling in Amethi and even before other rounds of polling were completed Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. The election process was postponed for a few days and votes were eventually counted in June 1991. He was declared winner after his death, but a bye-election had to be called.
Sonia Gandhi also represented this constituency from 1999 to 2004. Later On Rahul Gandhi started contesting elections from Amethi.
It will be interesting to see whether Rahul Gandhi can again win his old constituency in 2024 lok sabha elections or not.
