Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency witnessed a closely contested electoral battle between the Congress and the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections amid a 77.49% voter turnout.
Assam Lok Sabha Election 2024: Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam consisting of 10 Assembly segments. Polls for the Jorhat constituency will be held in the first phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on April 19, 2024 and the results will be declared on June, 4, 2024.
Akin to most constituencies in Assam, the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat was considered a Congress bastion before the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls when BJP’s Kamakhya Prasad Tasa captured the rival party’s fortress by defeating Congress’ Bijoy Krishna Handique by a margin of over 1 lakh votes.
In the 2019 polls, the saffron party maintained its grip on the Jorhat seat as Topon Kumar Gogoi defeated Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain by over 82,000 votes. This time around, the grand-old-party will eyeing to recapture Jorhat as its candidate Gaurav Gogoi looks to dethrone the BJP’s incumbent MP.

About Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency
The Jorhat seat witnessed a closely contested electoral battle between the Congress and the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections amid a 77.49% voter turnout. BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi secured 5,43,288 votes, defeating Congress’ Sushanta Borgohain by a margin of 82,653 votes.
The ruling BJP would be eyeing to retain the Jorhat constituency while the opposition Congress will be looking to regain its former glory in this key seat. Historically, the Congress has won the Jorhat seat 10 times since 1952 while the BJP has secured two victories– 2014 and 2019.
Elections for the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam will be held in three phases, beginning with phase 1 on April 19, and ending on May 7 (phase 3). Votes will be counted on June 4 and results declared on the same day, the Election Commission has announced.
