The event at the Sharzad restaurant was hosted by Dr. Najme Minhaj and his wife Seema, with many members of the South Asian and Muslim communities in attendance. It featured the Indian American candidate speaking on key issues as he runs for the 7th Congressional District in California.

In introducing Bera, Minhaj noted that the congressman had a lot of support from the communities attending the event, adding that the support continues to grow in advance of the election.

Among topics discussed at the fundraiser included community concerns such as hate crimes, healthcare and rising cost of education.

Bera, a member of the House Foreign Relations Committee, said that the country needs to de-legitimize hate groups, control healthcare costs and introduce more online technology into the college curriculum so that more can benefit at a lower cost.

In the Nov. 8 election, Bera is up against Republican Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.
