An Indian American resident of El Paso, Texas was arrested Oct. 30 morning at his home for allegedly fatally strangling his 92-year-old mother.
Rajeev Gupta, 55, has been charged with murder in the death of Kapoori Devi. He is being held in custody on a bond of $1 million.
According to an El Paso Police Department report, officers responded to a residence call on a welfare check, at 11:31 a.m. on Oct. 30. Arriving at the scene, officers found Devi dead inside the home in the gated community.
The circumstances surrounding Devi’s death were suspicious, according to police reports, and the Crimes Against Persons unit was called in to investigate. CAP’s investigation revealed that Gupta had killed his mother.
According to court documents obtained by several local media outlets, Gupta told police he had strangled his mother with a cell phone charger. His mother was found in her bedroom with a white charger wrapped around her neck.
The suspect also told police he had searched on the internet for ways to kill his mother, according to court documents.
Police found Gupta sitting on a recliner chair. He told police he was sorry, and then held out his arms to be arrested. The suspect told police that his mother suffered from a number of medical ailments and that he wanted to end her suffering, according to court documents.
Gupta told police that both he and his mother were unhappy and suffering, according to a complaint affidavit, as reported by the El Paso Times.
No additional information on Gupta was immediately available.
