New Delhi, July 27: The new wage code bill has been approved by the Union Cabinet on July 26. After the new bill is implemented, it will be ensured that a minimum wage is set across all sectors by amalgamating four labour related laws. This would benefit over 4 crore employees all over the nation. Four bills that will be consolidated in the Labour Code on Wages Bill include the Minimum Wages Act, 1948; the Payment of Wages Act, 1936; the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. Union Cabinet chaired by Mr. Narendra Modi, the honourable Prime Minister approved the draft of the bill. The center will be empowered to set a minimum wage across all the sectors across the nation. Nevertheless, higher minimum wage can be provided by the states in their jurisdiction than fixed by the central government. As per the bill, the minimum wage introduced will be applicable for all the workers irrespective of their pay. This will be done in order to ensure a universal minimum wage for all the workers and industries. Bandaru Dattatreya, the Labour Minister replied to Rajya Sabha informing that the Second National Commission on Labour has suggested that the labour laws should be grouped into 4 or 5 labour codes on a functional basis.
