Bengaluru: In a significant development, Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna was on Tuesday suspended from the Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) over alleged sex video case – showing him sexually assaulting multiple women. Apart from this, Prajwal Revanna – grandson of JDS chief and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda – was also issued a show cause notice by the party.
“We welcome SIT against Prajwal Revanna. We’ve taken a decision to recommend our party’s national president to suspend him from the party till the SIT investigation is completed, “says, JD(S) core committee president GT Devegowda.
“His (Prajwal Revanna) suspension is till the investigation is completed,” says former Karnataka CM and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy. he called the whole episode ‘shameful’.
The development comes after many video clips, involving Prajwal Revanna, surfaced on social media a day after Phase 2 of the Lok Sabha elections.
The sex scandal involves hundreds of explicit videos that were allegedly video shot by the MP and were circulated widely in the Hassan consituency.
A day after the second phase of the Lok Sabha Election in Bengaluru, one woman filed a police case against Prajwal Revanna, accusing him of sexual assault. She alleged she had been sexually abused multiple times between 2019 and 2022.
In the complaint, the woman alleged that Prajwal’s father HD Revanna also sexually assaulted her when his wife was not at home.
The whole episode came to limelight after thousands of pen drives allegedly having his sexual assault videos were circulated in Hassan, the Lok Sabha constituency from where he was contesting as BJP candidate.
Even as he said the videos were doctored, he left for Frankfurt on the day the Karnataka Police constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe sexual assault charges against him.
A sitting member of Lok Sabha from Hassan in Karnartaka, Prajwal Revanna is grandson of former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch H D Deve Gowda.
Notably, Prajwal Revanna is the only JD (S) leader to win in 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Hassan, a family political borough.
His father HD Revanna, eldest son of Deve Gowda, was minister in the cabinet led by his younger brother H D Kumaraswamy, who headed the Congress-JD (S) alliance government, in 2018-19.
It should be noted that Prajwal graduated as a mechanical engineer from Bangalore Institute of Technology in 2014 and was appointed JD (S) state general secretary in November 2019.
While campaigning for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, thousands of videos were circulated among the voters purportedly having sex of Prajwal with several women. Most of the videos were allegedly recorded by Prajwal on his mobile phone, which was then transferred to his laptop.
Many of these videos are said to be shot in his house and office. In the beginning, the Gowda family and the BJP termed the tapes as doctored to malign the image of the family in elections but later, HD Kumaraswamy distanced himself from the tapes saying the police was investigating the case.
