Amid the ongoing political turmoil in Karnataka surrounding the alleged sex video scandal involving JD-S leader Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the case has issued a notice to the accused, requiring him to appear for questioning within 24 hours, as per sources on Tuesday. Additionally, a notice has been served to JD-S MLA H.D. Revanna, Prajwal Revanna’s father and the second accused in the case. The allegations against the father-son duo include charges of sexual harassment, stalking, intimidation, and demeaning a woman, stemming from a complaint filed by a woman employed at Revanna’s residence.
In response to the escalating situation, the JD-S suspended Prajwal Revanna, the incumbent MP and Lok Sabha candidate from Hassan, on Tuesday morning. This action followed the establishment of an SIT by the Karnataka Congress government to investigate the allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
The notice issued by the SIT mandates the presence of both Prajwal Revanna and his father, H.D. Revanna, before SP Seema Latkar within the specified timeframe. The FIR was referred to the SIT, led by BK Singh, Additional Director-General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department.
This comes days after the Karnataka government ordered the formation of a SIT to probe a series of obscene videos circulating in Hassan district of Karnataka involving Prajwal Revanna, purportedly showing sexual acts by the 33-year-old leader with multiple women, sparking allegations of abuse and assault. Preliminary investigations showed that a pen drive in Hassan contained 2,976 videos, some a few seconds long and others that last a few minutes, with most seemingly recorded from a mobile phone at the Revanna residences in Bengaluru and Hassan.
The FIR was based on a complaint of a woman who worked at their home, alleging that she was sexually abused between 2019 and 2022. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (outraging modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
Revanna left the country for Germany on April 27, one day after the Lok Sabha elections in the state, with his father HD Revanna telling reporters on Monday that he would return if he was called for investigation.
HD Revanna had stated that he was open to an investigation over the allegations of sexual abuse involving his son Prajwal and himself, and said they were ready to face action in accordance with law, if the charges are proved.
Alleging that there was “politics” behind the issue, the elder son of JD(S) patriarch and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda said his son Prajwal Revanna would “join” the probe “whenever he is asked to.”
The National Commission for Women (NCW), which took cognisance of the case on Tuesday, sought a report within three days from the Karnataka Police.
In a letter, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma urged Karnataka DGP Alok Mohan to take prompt and decisive action and swiftly apprehend the accused, who has fled the country.
