Nestled amidst the dense and rugged forests of Nainital, Jim Corbett National Park is the abode of some of the most exotic animals. Built in 1936 as ‘Hailey National Park’, it was later renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1957, in honour of the legendary hunter Jim Corbett. Spread across 520 square kilometres, the park is considered to be the oldest and one of the largest in the country. Home to more than 400 different species of flora and fauna, the national park is a treasure trove of experience. Here are the different ways in which you can explore the region.
Elephant Safari
Elephant safari in Jim Corbett is one of the most exciting and sought after safari options in the park. Elephant safari not only affords you the closest encounter with the fascinating inhabitants of the jungle, but also takes you to some of the core areas that are otherwise impossible to access, even with jeeps or open canters. In addition, these safaris don’t leave any carbon footprint behind and contribute to the conservation efforts of the park. Conducted twice a day, the two-hour safaris are conducted on first come first serve basis and need no prior booking.
Canter Safari
Conducted and operated by the forest officials, canter safaris are yet another way to go deep into the wilderness of Jim Corbett Park. If you’re travelling in a large group of 16-18 people, open-roof canters are the most ideal way to enjoy wildlife safaris. Also, the vehicle assures maximum safety to the passengers. This too operates twice daily; however, it is advisable to book the safari well in advance. Canter safaris last for a good five hours; so go prepared for a rather immersive experience.
Jeep Safari
Among all the safari options at Jim Corbett Park, jeep safaris are the most popular. Conducted twice in a day, these safaris are allowed through all the buffer zones of the park unlike the other safaris. Since jeeps are smaller in size, compared to canters, they take you to some of the hidden corners of the jungles that are often visited by the majestic Bengal Tigers and other wild predators.
